Double a vowel mark at the end of a word and it gains an n sound you
never see written:
two fatḥas — -an (usually with a silent alif after it)
two kasras — -in
two ḍammas — -un
Tanwīn roughly means “a/an”: كِتَاب is “book”, كِتَابٌ is
“a book”.
بًاfatḥatān-an
بٍkasratān-in
بٌḍammatān-un
Words you hear every day
Some of the most common Arabic words end in tanwīn — and one of them is a
word Uzbek uses all the time:
Masalan and doimo are mathalan and dāʾiman with the tanwīn worn
smooth. The alif after the two fatḥas is written but not read: it’s a seat,
not a vowel.
